Learning objectives: After this lesson students will be able to use internet and conduct research based on their given topics and rely less on teacher and more on their own initiative for knowledge creation. Students will gather real world data and share their findings among their peers and broadens their roles from investigators of products to designers.
|
Formal and informal assessment: Students will be assessed based on their essay. I will assess their essays based on the amount of information that students retained from the lesson on the benefits of using fruits and vegetables.
|
Introduction:
I will make a Powerpoint based on the research I conducted on the benefits of fruits and vegetables. I will introduce the lesson by explaining to class that fruits and vegetables are a great source of minerals and vitamins and consuming large amounts of fruits and vegetables will prevent germs and make them more healthy. I will then ask the students three benefits of consuming more fruits and vegetables. Students will be asked to do a think pair and then share their answers among their classmates. After that we will watch a video on YouTube based on the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1sh_XGKJ-Q After this video I will ask the students to go on computers with internet access and search on various benefits of fruits and vegetables. They have to search on the various minerals and vitamins found in different fruits and vegetables and how can these vitamins and minerals help their body and how it fights diseases. We will have a small party where there will be a fruit bowl and students will be given a choice to pick their favorite fruit and eat it in class and explain why they chose the fruit and give the class some details on fruit like the kind of minerals and vitamins that particular fruit has. After the end of the lesson they will be asked to write an essay based on their research and they will be given a writing rubric to follow and will be graded based on their work. |
Differentiation: Students who are special needs and ESL learners will be asked to make a colorful chart. I will provide them different pictures of fruits and vegetables and they will be given some flipcharts. They will work one on one with the para and myself to paste the right vitamins and minerals next to the fruits/ vegetables and they will be asked to present this to the rest of the class.
|
Reflection: This lesson is great for all the students as all get to participate in class. Students are allowed to use computer that will expand their horizons and they will learn how to do extensive research on computers and students with learning needs and ESL learners will equally get to participate by working one on one and among their peers.
Support Synopsis:
Powerpoint: It’s a great tool for teachers to organize and save their lesson plans and make changes when necessary. It allows the teachers to modify and record their instructions and you can adjust the volume and speed for the students who are hard of hearing or to aid ESL learners you can add on subtitles.
YouTube: It’s a great and effective tool to visually aid the students to learn concepts. Computers/ Internet Access: Internet is a great tool to do extensive research and learn so much digitally. Children learn to do search and use of citations and it prepares them for older grade levels.

Lesson 2
Candidate’s Name: Arooj ZulfiqarGrade Level: Second GradeTitle of the lesson: Reduce, Recycle and ReuseLength of the lesson: Three PeriodsFifth Lesson
Central focus: After this lesson students will be able to learn the three C’s reducing, reusing and recycling, what is the importance of recycling and why we should recycle. They will be able to identify the ways that we can implement to reduce, reuse and recycle. They will be able to identify the objects that can be recycle and it will increase their interest to recycle in classroom and at home. They will be able to understand pollution and its effect on the earth.
Key questions: What is reducing, recycling and reusing? What things can we recycle? Why we have two garbage bins for regular garbage and recycle objects in classroom? Explain importance on recycling on daily basis, and create and maintain a recycling bin for daily recycling. |
Prior Knowledge: Students are anticipated to have knowledge on what is meant to recycle, we have a garbage can one for regular garbage and one for recycle so they are expected to know the difference. They are expected to know how to properly dispose of objects that can be recycled. Some concept on pollution and its effects on earth.

Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY .RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY .RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY .RI.4.7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY .RI.4.8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text. |
Vocabulary: Reduce, Recycle, Pollution, Reuse
|
Learning objectives: Why we should recycle? What is the importance of recycling? How can we eliminate pollution?
|
Formal and informal assessment: Students will be evaluated on how well they can differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable items based on the worksheet that is provided and the game score they play on recycling. I will assess their knowledge based on class discussion and participation in the different activities.
|
Introduction: I will introduce the lesson by playing a video on BrainPOP on recyclinghttps://www.brainpop.com/technology/scienceandindustry/recycling/
After the video students will be asked to discuss in pairs on what is recycling and if they recycle at home. After the discussion I will explain to students that recycling is taking an object and rather than throwing it away, we should send it away so we can reuse it. Then I will show them another video https://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/84528738617 this gives them an idea on what are the different objects that are reusable. After this I will explain on what is reducing and I will tell students that by not reducing, they are creating more |
waste which is bad for the Earth. We will discuss ways that we can reduce example would be use a plastic lunchbox rather than paper bag.
Day Two: I will introduce the lesson by playing this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OasbYWF4_S8 Then I will teach students about the importance of reusing materials which cut back on the amount of waste that is produced. I will discuss the ways that we can reuse items like donating clothing and using glass jars to collect coins. I will then ask students to share ideas on what items can be reused rather than thrown away. Activity: We will do an activity on how old things can be reused for a new purpose. I will ask the students to take a clean glass or plastic jar and decorate it than put on their desk to reuse like to put pencils and crayons. After this I will give every student a worksheet http://www.personal.kent.edu/~avennett/Worksheet.htm They will have to circle the items that can be recycled. After this whole lesson students will be asked to play a game on their ipads on National Geographic Kids https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/games/action/recycle-roundup-new/ This will clear up the concept more and they will know what objects to recycle or dispose |
Materials:
Internet Videos on YouTube BrainPOP videos National Geographic Game Worksheet Plastic or glass jars Paper Pens |
Reflection: This lesson is hands on for the all the class students regardless of their needs. The worksheet is easy to use for students with special needs and lack of English skills where the game will allow all the students to learn concepts and help their peers. This will make them more aware on reusing, recycling and reducing the waste.
|
Support Synopsis: I used various YouTube and BrainPOP videos to elaborate more on recycling, reusing and reducing since the students learn best visually. This helps the ESL learners as well since they can watch videos and clear their concepts. The game on recyclinghttps://kids.nationalgeographic.com/games/action/recycle-roundup-new/ is a great and fun tool to
get the kids engage in the lesson and this way they will have more clarity on recycling and they will learn it more faster and remember it for future.
I love how you made learning about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables fun and exciting! Students get to use both the internet and can even have a party that is filled with it!! Nice work!
